From Barbiecore to punk rock – pink dominates pop culture and has become one of the most popular alternative hair colours. Whether it’s a soft pastel pink, an eye-popping hot pink, or a luxurious rose gold, here’s your essential guide to finding, applying and maintaining your perfect pink hair dye.
Pink hair colours cover a broad spectrum, from the delicate tones of baby pink and coral, to the bold, vivid hues of fuchsia, magenta and raspberry. With so many options to pick from, your ideal pink will depend a lot on your personal features and your preferred style.
When choosing pink hair colours, you’ll want the one that gives your complexion a healthy, radiant glow – not one that can make it appear dull or washed-out. Here’s a quick breakdown of which pink shades pair up perfectly with your skin’s tone and undertone:
These shades are a great guide, but they’re only a recommendation. Pink is surprisingly versatile, and numerous shades show up well across complexions. Experimenting with pink tones helps you discover the one that feels most flattering to both your features and your personal style.

Your natural hair colour will also influence what pink tones are most suitable for you. As a lighter, brighter colour, most shades of pink require a blonde base to have the desired impact. If your hair is naturally darker, we recommend using a hair lightening kit before you commit to dyeing your hair pink.
However, some darker, deeper shades of pink can still show up well on brown or darker hair, or at the very least leave a subtle, sophisticated tint.
A pale blonde base (Level 9-10) is the ideal canvas for any shade of pink you want, from the softest baby pink through to the richest magenta. Having a blonde base allows you to get the best results with:
A general rule is that the brighter or softer your preferred pink colour, the lighter you should make your base.
The depth of your brown hair colour will determine what pink hues you can apply without pre-lightening. For light brown hair colours, warmer, vivid shades work best, including:
These are more forgiving of the warm undertones that naturally occur in light brown hair. However, for darker brown hair, you are limited to only the deepest shades if you want to dye it pink without lightening:
Black is the most challenging base. When dyeing black hair pink, you’ll almost certainly need to pre-lighten it to achieve the desired effect. Without bleaching, you’re likely to produce a subtle hint of pink at the very most, which probably won’t last long.

Have a stronger sense of your perfect pink? Now, let’s talk about how to dye your hair pink at home, so you can produce flawless shades and experiment to your heart’s content:
Looking for a very light, pastel pink hair colour? If you want a shade that’s even paler than our Pastel Pink or Pastel Rose tones, we recommend blending it with one of our hair toners or conditioners before application.
As all Directions semi-permanent hair colours are fully mixable, you have the flexibility to lighten or darken our range of pinks, however you see fit, creating shades made just for you. But remember:

If any pink dye ends up on your skin, try to remove it as soon as possible with a soft cloth or cotton pad dampened with warm water. Fresh colour is easier to lift before it has fully developed.
For more stubborn stains, micellar water, a gentle facial wash or cleansing oil can help remove the remaining pigment. Apply gently in circular motions, then rinse well with warm water.
If pink hair dye gets onto clothing, rinse the fabric under cold running water, working from the back where possible to help lift the colour from the fibres. Apply a liquid detergent or stain remover directly to the area, allow it to sit briefly, then put it in the wash.
For carpets, upholstery or other soft furnishings, avoid rubbing the stain as this can spread it further. Instead, gently blot any excess dye with a clean cloth, then dab the area using warm water mixed with a small amount of mild detergent or diluted white vinegar.
After applying your preferred shade of pink, you probably want it to stay that way as long as possible. Semi-permanent pink hair dye will naturally fade away over time, but there are steps you can take to extend your colour brilliance:
The longevity of your pink hair dye depends on several things. First, the shade of pink. Softer, paler pinks, such as baby pink or pastel pink hair, will fade away significantly faster than deeper pinks, such as magenta or fuchsia.
Furthermore, as pink hair dye is often applied onto pre-lightened hair, this is more porous than untreated hair, meaning colour will escape faster.
Following the steps above, especially washing your hair with cool water using our colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner, helps ensure that even the softest pink lasts noticeably longer. Also, our colours are designed for regular top-ups without harming your hair, so you can revitalise your look whenever it starts to fade.
At Directions, we formulate our semi-permanent hair dyes with nourishing, deep-conditioning ingredients to protect the look, health and feel of your hair. They add moisture as well as deposit colour, meaning minimal damage with every application.
We advise against using permanent pink hair dyes if you’re concerned about your hair’s long-term health. As these often contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, peroxide and PPDs, they can make hair more brittle and susceptible to damage.
As mentioned earlier, all Directions hair colours are completely mixable, giving you the freedom to create custom pink shades using our wider range. While it’s good to experiment, here are our suggestions for colours that go particularly well with pink:
In most cases, we advise against mixing pink hair dye with shades of yellow, green and brown. These often result in muddy, murky tones that are far from flattering.

When mixing colours at home, remember:
The versatility and power of pink make it a popular choice for split-dye looks, balayage, ombre and highlights. Whether it is a complementary blend or a show-stopping contrast, here are some of our favourite pink pairings:

Is the pink party coming to an end? If you’re planning on moving on to another colour, here are a few tips for getting pink dye out of your hair:
Avoid using bleach or harsh colour removers at home, as these can dry your hair and make it look uneven once the pink colour lifts.
It depends on what shade of pink hair you started with:
Whether you’re drawn to soft pastel pinks, playful rose tones or bold, statement-making magentas, pink hair allows for endless creativity and looks that you can make your own.
At Directions, our pink hair colours are made for those who live to express themselves, no matter if you embrace the brightness of Barbiecore, or prefer a more luxurious rose gold style.
