Whoever said brown was boring? From lighter shades of beige, hazel and ash, to the rich depth of mahogany, auburn and chocolate. These tones are timeless yet contemporary, and the right brown makes a big impression. Here, we share our tips for finding your best brunette, explain how to dye your hair brown at home, and show you how to get the most out of your favourite shade.

What is the best shade of brown hair dye for me?

Brown is one of the most versatile colours around, ranging from the sweet lightness of caramel to the dark intensity of chestnut and espresso. But finding which brown hair dye suits your style relies a lot on your unique features, skin tone and natural base colour.

What brown hair dye is best for my skin tone?

The right shade of brown hair enhances your features, bringing warmth and depth to your complexion. The wrong one can leave skin looking washed out or overly harsh. Choosing a brown that complements your skin tone makes all the difference. Here’s a guide to the brown shades that tend to work best for different complexions:

  • Pale skin: Softer, cooler browns are the best choice to avoid washing out. Ash browns, cool mochas, light chestnuts and similar shades benefit your complexion, while you should usually avoid darker, harsher browns.
  • Medium skin: Medium skin is versatile, so it mixes well with a range of brown shades. Warm chestnuts, caramel browns and mushroom browns are especially flattering, adding dimension to your look.
  • Olive skin: Rich, warm browns complement the green-gold undertones of olive skin. Golden browns, dark caramels and bronze browns like Bronzite enhance the skin’s natural warmth without clashing.
  • Dark skin: Deeper brown shades create a gorgeous contrast and dimension for darker skin tones. Chocolate brown, espresso, mahogany – including our own Brown Jasper – are inspired choices.
  • Warm undertones: Lean into your natural warmth with equally warm brown shades – golden brown, honey brown, auburns, copper browns. Browns with red undertones, like Bloodstone, are also a great fit.
  • Cool undertones: Cool-toned shades bring balance to your complexion, so opt for ash browns, mushroom browns or smokier shades. Avoid orange-tinted browns as they can highlight redness in your skin.
  • Neutral undertones: While this offers the best flexibility in terms of brown hair colours, our favourites for neutral undertones include hazel, walnut, chestnut and dark chocolate.

These shades are a helpful starting point, but they’re not hard rules. Many brown tones work beautifully across different complexions, so feel free to explore. Trying different shades helps you find the brown that complements both your features and personal style.

What brown hair dye works with my natural colour?

Your natural hair colour also plays a role in which shades of brown work for you. While naturally lighter tones can often comfortably absorb any brown, there are more limited options for darker bases.

For the most vibrant results, we always recommend using a hair lightening kit before applying brown hair colour. But darker brown colours, such as our Bloodstone shade, can deliver strong results on most bases.

Dyeing blonde hair brown

A pale blonde base (Level 9-10) gives you the freedom to choose from the entire spectrum of brown hair colours, from the lightest beige to the deepest mahogany. We suggest lightening your hair to this level if you wish to switch to the following brown tones:

  • Honey brown
  • Caramel brown
  • Golden brown
  • Beige brown
  • Mushroom brown
  • Light ash brown

Naturally blonde hair can also lighten medium-to-darker shades of brown, achieving a fashionable “bronde” hair colour.

Dyeing black hair brown

On naturally black or very dark brown hair, most semi-permanent brown shades will be very subtle or almost invisible. If your hair is naturally darker and you wish to dye it brown, we highly recommend pre-lightening your hair to a lighter level before application.

For the best results, we recommend lightening hair to Level 7-8 at minimum. Any lower than this and your chosen brown may not develop with the same intensity or vibrancy you anticipated.

Enhancing your natural brown tones

The right dye can revitalise your existing brown hair colour, giving it a beautiful shine, gloss and definition.

If you would like to do this, our main recommendation is to choose a brown that closely resembles your natural base or a darker shade. Attempting to apply a lighter tone than your natural colour without pre-lightening will likely only produce a subtle tint rather than a complete transformation.

How do I dye my hair brown at home? A step-by-step guide

Now you’ve got a stronger sense of your best shade of brown, here we’ll explain how to dye your hair brown at home:

  1. Perform a strand test and skin patch test before colouring to test your colour and avoid unwanted reactions.
  2. If you’re applying a lighter or more vibrant brown, consider pre-lightening your hair with a hair lightening kit.
  3. Wash your hair with a pre-colour shampoo to remove build-up and create the ideal base for your chosen brown shade.
  4. Apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly around your hairline, ears and neck, wear gloves to protect your hands, and cover clothing with dark towels or salon capes.
  5. Transfer your chosen brown colour(s) into a mixing bowl using a tint brush for easier application.
  6. Section your hair using clips and apply colour from roots to ends with a tint brush, ensuring even coverage throughout.
  7. Leave the colour to process for 15-30 minutes, adjusting the time according to your strand test results and desired depth.
  8. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water until the water runs almost clear.
  9. Gently towel-dry and style as desired to enjoy your fresh new brown hair colour.

Why is my hair turning green or orange when I dye it brown?

Brown hair dye turning green or orange when applied usually means your underlying pigment balance is off.

If your hair turns green, muddy or khaki, this can be due to the blue/green base in cooler shades of brown, such as ash browns or mushroom browns, overcorrecting on a porous or light base. Very porous hair can also grab cool tones unevenly. To prevent this, consider colouring with a neutral or warm brown rather than ash.

If your hair turns orange or brassy, this may mean your hair’s warm undertones overpower the darkness or coolness of your chosen brown. Consider using a neutral or slightly cooler brown hue when dyeing in the future, or pre-lighten your hair to correct the orange tint.

How do I get brown hair dye off my skin?

If brown hair dye has left marks on your skin, gently dab the stained area with a warm, damp flannel or cotton pad to lift any fresh colour before it sets.

If the stain remains, use a little cleansing oil, facial cleanser or micellar water to help break it down. Gently massage the area in small circular motions, then rinse thoroughly.

How do I get brown hair out of clothes or carpet?

To remove brown hair dye from clothing, flush the stained area with cold water from the back of the fabric to help push the dye out. Apply a laundry stain treatment or liquid detergent, leave it for a few minutes, then wash.

For carpets or soft furnishings, gently blot the area with a dry cloth to soak up excess colour. Next, use a solution of warm water with a little mild detergent or diluted white vinegar, and lightly dab the stain until it fades.

How can I maintain my brown hair colour?

Once you’ve achieved your brand-new brown hair colour, you probably want to keep it that way for as long as possible. While every semi-permanent brown hair dye fades over time, there are several things you can do to keep your colour alive for longer:

  • Use our specially formulated pre-colour shampoo before applying your brown hair dye, as it helps prepare the hair for more even colour absorption and better results
  • Reduce how often you wash your hair – around 2-3 times a week is ideal, rinsing with cool or lukewarm water to maintain depth and shine
  • When you do wash, use our colour-protecting shampoos and conditioners, as these help preserve rich brown tones while keeping hair nourished
  • Limit the use of heated styling tools where you can, as frequent exposure to high temperatures may cause colour to lose its vibrancy faster
  • Shield your hair from external factors, such as direct sun, chlorine and salt water, as these can cause fading and affect your colour’s richness

Does brown hair dye damage hair?

The right brown hair dye should never harm the health or feel of your hair. At Directions, all of our semi-permanent hair dyes are made with nourishing, conditioning formulas that help leave hair looking sleek, shiny and frizz-free. Our brown shades deposit colour and add moisture to minimise damage with every application.

We recommend avoiding permanent brown hair dyes where possible, as many formulas contain ingredients such as ammonia, peroxide and PPDs. With repeated use, these can contribute to dryness and leave hair more prone to damage.

Can I top up my semi-permanent brown hair dye?

Absolutely. We highly encourage every Directions user to top up their colour whenever their shade starts to fade away. Whether it’s boosting your look between salon visits, or you’re keeping your shade strong and vibrant at home, regular top-ups are the key to long-lasting colour.

Mixing brown hair colours

Our full range of brown hair colours is completely mixable, giving you the flexibility to create your own personalised shades. Alongside blending different brown tones, colours that often work well when paired with brown hair dyes include:

  • Brown & black hair dye: Brown and black are a very natural combination, with the black deepening and darkening the brown into a dark chocolate or espresso shade.
  • Brown & red hair dye: Depending on the ratios, red can transform brown into rich auburn, chestnut or mahogany.
  • Brown & copper hair dyeBrown delivers some incredible depth and dimension to the trending copper shade, providing a best-of-both-worlds result.
  • Brown & blonde hair dye: “Bronde” has entered our vocabulary due to the quality of this combination, creating caramel, honey and toffee shades depending on your ratios.

While numerous colours blend beautifully with brown, we would advise mixing with blue or purple shades, as these neutralise warm tones, or yellow hair dyes, because they can result in a murky, greenish-brown result. If you would like a combination of these colours, we recommend talking to a professional colourist.

When mixing colours at home, remember:

  • Use a mixing bowl and tint brushes to combine colours
  • Measure your ratios carefully to get the best outcome
  • Perform a strand test to try out your custom shade
  • Mix a maximum of 2-3 colours at once

What hair colours go well with brown hair dye?

For those who live for split dyes, balayage, ombre and beyond, brown is one of the most versatile shades for hair colour combinations. From complementary tones to eye-catching contrasts, here are our suggested shades to pair with brown:

  • Brown & black hair: A classic, low-contrast split that often looks sleek and intentional
  • Brown & dark red hair: The warmth and richness of a dark red or auburn sit close enough to brown for a harmonious combo
  • Brown & blonde hair: Blonde highlights add a natural, sun-kissed effect to a brown base
  • Brown & copper hair: Warm tones complement each other well, making brown and copper a great pairing
  • Brown & navy blue hair: The darkness of navy blue means it feels grounded rather than garish against brown
  • Brown & forest green hair: Deeper, darker greens combine well with earthier shades of brown

How do I remove brown hair dye?

Ready to move on from your current brown? If you’re planning a colour change, there are a few ways to help fade brown hair dye faster before your next look:

  • Wash your hair more frequently using warm water, as this can help open the hair cuticle and encourage brown colour pigments to fade quicker
  • Apply a deep conditioning treatment during washing and leave it on for 10-20 minutes before rinsing, as this may help soften the colour
  • Consider speaking with a professional colourist who can recommend the safest approach for fading brown hair dye

Avoid using bleach or harsh colour removers at home where possible, as these can be drying and may leave hair looking uneven once the brown colour has lifted.

What colour does brown hair dye fade into?

This depends on your shade of brown hair colour:

  • Warm browns have red and orange pigments, so they fade into orange or brassy tones over time
  • Dark brown hair often passes through a warm, reddish-brown phase as the darker pigments wash out first
  • Ash browns and similar cool-toned browns fade into flat grey-beige shades
  • Auburn browns fade into a washed-out copper or strawberry tones over time
