Whoever said brown was boring? From lighter shades of beige, hazel and ash, to the rich depth of mahogany, auburn and chocolate. These tones are timeless yet contemporary, and the right brown makes a big impression. Here, we share our tips for finding your best brunette, explain how to dye your hair brown at home, and show you how to get the most out of your favourite shade.
Brown is one of the most versatile colours around, ranging from the sweet lightness of caramel to the dark intensity of chestnut and espresso. But finding which brown hair dye suits your style relies a lot on your unique features, skin tone and natural base colour.
The right shade of brown hair enhances your features, bringing warmth and depth to your complexion. The wrong one can leave skin looking washed out or overly harsh. Choosing a brown that complements your skin tone makes all the difference. Here’s a guide to the brown shades that tend to work best for different complexions:
These shades are a helpful starting point, but they’re not hard rules. Many brown tones work beautifully across different complexions, so feel free to explore. Trying different shades helps you find the brown that complements both your features and personal style.

Your natural hair colour also plays a role in which shades of brown work for you. While naturally lighter tones can often comfortably absorb any brown, there are more limited options for darker bases.
For the most vibrant results, we always recommend using a hair lightening kit before applying brown hair colour. But darker brown colours, such as our Bloodstone shade, can deliver strong results on most bases.
A pale blonde base (Level 9-10) gives you the freedom to choose from the entire spectrum of brown hair colours, from the lightest beige to the deepest mahogany. We suggest lightening your hair to this level if you wish to switch to the following brown tones:
Naturally blonde hair can also lighten medium-to-darker shades of brown, achieving a fashionable “bronde” hair colour.
On naturally black or very dark brown hair, most semi-permanent brown shades will be very subtle or almost invisible. If your hair is naturally darker and you wish to dye it brown, we highly recommend pre-lightening your hair to a lighter level before application.
For the best results, we recommend lightening hair to Level 7-8 at minimum. Any lower than this and your chosen brown may not develop with the same intensity or vibrancy you anticipated.
The right dye can revitalise your existing brown hair colour, giving it a beautiful shine, gloss and definition.
If you would like to do this, our main recommendation is to choose a brown that closely resembles your natural base or a darker shade. Attempting to apply a lighter tone than your natural colour without pre-lightening will likely only produce a subtle tint rather than a complete transformation.

Now you’ve got a stronger sense of your best shade of brown, here we’ll explain how to dye your hair brown at home:
Brown hair dye turning green or orange when applied usually means your underlying pigment balance is off.
If your hair turns green, muddy or khaki, this can be due to the blue/green base in cooler shades of brown, such as ash browns or mushroom browns, overcorrecting on a porous or light base. Very porous hair can also grab cool tones unevenly. To prevent this, consider colouring with a neutral or warm brown rather than ash.
If your hair turns orange or brassy, this may mean your hair’s warm undertones overpower the darkness or coolness of your chosen brown. Consider using a neutral or slightly cooler brown hue when dyeing in the future, or pre-lighten your hair to correct the orange tint.
If brown hair dye has left marks on your skin, gently dab the stained area with a warm, damp flannel or cotton pad to lift any fresh colour before it sets.
If the stain remains, use a little cleansing oil, facial cleanser or micellar water to help break it down. Gently massage the area in small circular motions, then rinse thoroughly.
To remove brown hair dye from clothing, flush the stained area with cold water from the back of the fabric to help push the dye out. Apply a laundry stain treatment or liquid detergent, leave it for a few minutes, then wash.
For carpets or soft furnishings, gently blot the area with a dry cloth to soak up excess colour. Next, use a solution of warm water with a little mild detergent or diluted white vinegar, and lightly dab the stain until it fades.
Once you’ve achieved your brand-new brown hair colour, you probably want to keep it that way for as long as possible. While every semi-permanent brown hair dye fades over time, there are several things you can do to keep your colour alive for longer:
The right brown hair dye should never harm the health or feel of your hair. At Directions, all of our semi-permanent hair dyes are made with nourishing, conditioning formulas that help leave hair looking sleek, shiny and frizz-free. Our brown shades deposit colour and add moisture to minimise damage with every application.
We recommend avoiding permanent brown hair dyes where possible, as many formulas contain ingredients such as ammonia, peroxide and PPDs. With repeated use, these can contribute to dryness and leave hair more prone to damage.
Absolutely. We highly encourage every Directions user to top up their colour whenever their shade starts to fade away. Whether it’s boosting your look between salon visits, or you’re keeping your shade strong and vibrant at home, regular top-ups are the key to long-lasting colour.
Our full range of brown hair colours is completely mixable, giving you the flexibility to create your own personalised shades. Alongside blending different brown tones, colours that often work well when paired with brown hair dyes include:
While numerous colours blend beautifully with brown, we would advise mixing with blue or purple shades, as these neutralise warm tones, or yellow hair dyes, because they can result in a murky, greenish-brown result. If you would like a combination of these colours, we recommend talking to a professional colourist.
When mixing colours at home, remember:

For those who live for split dyes, balayage, ombre and beyond, brown is one of the most versatile shades for hair colour combinations. From complementary tones to eye-catching contrasts, here are our suggested shades to pair with brown:

Ready to move on from your current brown? If you’re planning a colour change, there are a few ways to help fade brown hair dye faster before your next look:
Avoid using bleach or harsh colour removers at home where possible, as these can be drying and may leave hair looking uneven once the brown colour has lifted.
This depends on your shade of brown hair colour:
Whether you’re after a soft, natural brunette finish or a richer, deeper brown with brilliant warmth, brown hair offers timeless style and incredible versatility.
At Directions, our brown hair dyes stand out from the crowd, whether it’s enhancing your natural tones or embracing a whole new colour.
