Not exactly. Fluorescent hair colours don’t glow in true darkness. Instead, these dyes are UV-reactive. When exposed to a UV blacklight, fluorescent hair colours absorb UV light and re-emit it as visible light.

That’s why they seem to glow in the dark – they can convert invisible UV energy into bright light, while other non-fluorescent colours can only reflect ambient light.

Neon hair colours also look bright and saturated in normal daylight, but under UV blacklights is where they really shine – literally and figuratively.

Choosing the right fluorescent or neon hair colour depends largely on your personal style and preferences. We encourage you to experiment and find the one that fits your look.

However, one thing you may want to consider is your skin tone:

Pre-lightening for the most intense results

Before we get to the steps, you must have the right base to absorb and elevate your chosen fluorescent colour.

For the most intense, true-to-tone shade, you ideally want to start from a Level 9 or 10 blonde on the hair colour chart. This is especially important for fluorescent dyes because darker hair absorbs light rather than reflects it, so the UV-reactive glow is muted or lost entirely. At most, you’ll get a subtle tint of colour, but nothing substantial.

So unless you have naturally light blonde hair, we highly recommend using a hair lightening kit before applying your shade. This helps ensure the bold, glowing pop of colour you’re looking for.

Don’t want to commit to all-over hair lightening? Consider only lightening certain strands or sections of your hair for UV-reactive money-pieces, highlights, balayage or ombré ends.

Our guide to applying fluorescent hair dye

1. Carry out a strand test and skin patch test. The strand test previews how your colour will appear on a hidden strand of hair, while the skin patch test checks for allergic reactions. You may want a UV light handy to test your colour's intensity.
2. Wash your hair with Directions Pre Colour Shampoo. This eliminates build-up and gives your hair the ideal pH balance for colour absorption.
3. Apply a thin layer of Vaseline, baby oil or petroleum jelly along your hairline, ears and neck, put on gloves, and cover yourself with a salon cape or dark towels.
4. Transfer your chosen fluorescent hair dye from its pot into a mixing bowl, giving you greater control and keeping mess to a minimum.
5. After separating your hair into sections, apply your dye with a tint brush, starting from the roots. Make sure every strand is covered in colour.
6. Give your colour 15-30 minutes to absorb into your hair, or follow the processing time suggested by your strand test.
7. Rinse your hair under cool or lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Avoid doing this in the shower to keep colour out of your eyes.

How do I get fluorescent hair dye off skin?

Should you miss a stain, don’t worry. Some micellar water, mild facial cleanser, or cleansing oil can help lift it off your skin. Massage it gently, and rinse away with warm water.

Even when you cover up with a salon cape, apron or towels, there’s always a chance that dye lands on your clothes. If it does, you don’t need to throw it away. Run the stain under cold water, then apply a liquid detergent or stain remover. After a few minutes, pop your clothes in the wash.

Should stains appear on your carpet, furniture or belongings, quickly dab the area with a clean cloth. Be gentle – scrubbing the stain risks it spreading further. When you’ve lifted what you can, lightly work over the stain with a cloth dampened in a mix of warm water and either washing-up liquid or white vinegar.
